Ed has been an orchid aficionado for over four decades. In his 12 years with FCOS, he has served many years as Vice President and Board Member and has been a tireless advocate for orchid awareness and education. Ed diligently maintains the FCOS newsletter and website, engaging enthusiasts both locally and globally. Beyond his administrative duties, Ed actively promotes FCOS’ mission by facilitating educational programs, organizing field trips, orchestrating auctions, and curating captivating orchid shows. He generously shares his expertise by delivering talks at local nurseries along the California Coast at esteemed venues like CalPoly and the San Luis Obispo Botanical Gardens. He meticulously curates his personal and extensive orchid collection within his world-class greenhouse, sharing his insights with a global audience through FCOS activities, publications, and contribution of articles to the Orchid Digest. Ed is a cherished friend within the orchid world. He embodies kindness, warmth, camaraderie, and collaboration. His multifaceted contributions are deeply appreciated, and he is a most deserving candidate for Orchid Digest’s prestigious Diamond Award.

The Denver Orchid Society is pleased to present the Orchid Digest Diamond Award to Keith Funk. Keith has spent a good part of his life working for the members of the Denver Orchid Society. Not only has he spent several terms on the board, serving several times as program chair, but he’s also worked tirelessly
to make sure that the society’s shows are successful, well-run, and excellent fund-raisers for the benefit of the membership. He’s never lost his enthusiasm for orchids and is always happy to share that enthusiasm with members, especially new growers. His growing spaces are always a wonderful array of hundreds of beautifully kept plants that he’s happy to show off at a moment’s notice. Most recently, he’s spear-headed efforts to return membership numbers to pre-COVID levels, and he’s very pleased to have accomplished that goal. We appreciate this opportunity to thank Keith for his decades of service to the society and to the greater orchid-growing community. Congratulations on an extraordinary orchid life.

The Virtual Orchid Society of Puerto Rico proudly honors Lesbia Almodovar, our first Orchid Digest Diamond Award recipient. Lesbia has helped our society members by sharing with others the cultivation techniques she has found to bloom her orchids successfully. Despite not growing orchids for a long time, she has shown that it is not time but interest in reading, studying, observing, and training to acquire the knowledge that brings wonderful results. Together with her husband Julio Pérez, who grows cattleyas, they have been faithful collaborators in all our club projects, standing out among all members and becoming loved by everyone. For these reasons, she was selected to receive such a prestigious award, a gift certificate valued at $200, and a one-year membership to The Orchid Digest. Congratulations, Lesbia.

Richard Humke

The Kentucky Orchid Society is honored to present the 2023 Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to Richard Humke. Dick has been a faithful, active member of the society for many years, participating in all KOS activities. He has served in various positions on the Board, including vice president, followed by president in 2007 and 2008. Dick even assumed the treasurer’s position under quite difficult circumstances several years ago and held that position for six more years. As co-chair for the Kentucky Orchid Show from 2018-2021, he weathered the pandemic, making all the necessary plans despite having to cancel them at the last minute. Dick was key to obtaining a wonderful venue for our show at an amazingly low price many years ago, which we continue to enjoy each year. Dick has been an outstanding orchid grower, particularly of masdevallias, paphs, and bulbos, and has had an ongoing interest in the education of fellow KOS members on how to be a successful grower.

The Massachusetts Orchid Society proudly honors Brigitte Fortin with the Orchid Digest Diamond Award for Excellence. A member since 1991, Brigitte has served on the Board in several capacities for over a decade. She has been an active Show Table committee member for years and has served as a scribe. Brigitte has led our Annual Orchid Show for years as chairperson and travels to the other New England Society Shows frequently every year to design and set up the Massachusetts Orchid Society Display. An excellent grower in her own right, she has been showered with awards for her orchids, designs, and displays. She puts the Mass Orchid Society in the public spotlight several times each year.

Kathy & Bill Ethridge

The Kansas Orchid Society is honored to present the Orchid Digest Diamond Award to Kathy and Bill Ethridge. Kathy & Bill have been members of the Kansas Orchid Society since 1996. Kathy always serves the Society with a smile on her face. She has served as KOS Treasurer for over fifteen years and served on the Board of Directors several times. Kathy now serves as our Native Orchid and Conservation Chairperson. Kathy has also jumped in and handled the marketing of various events, such as our annual fall shows and auctions. Bill has handled our accounting needs.
Kathy and Bill are active members of the Wichita Area Garden Council; as members of the Council, they keep KOS connected to the other garden societies in the area.
They were always willing to host our summer picnic at their lovely home and gardens on the Little Arkansas River. Kathy shared her secrets of growing orchids in a semi-subterranean greenhouse.
Kathy’s and Bill’s contributions over the years have been invaluable, and we hope to continue the association for many more.

The Long Beach Amateur Orchid Society is honored to present the Orchid Digest Diamond Award to Norm Nakanishi, who served as our President for nearly six years.
Norm has been involved with orchids since his teen years. He is an excellent grower who easily educates and shares his knowledge with beginners and seasoned orchid growers alike. Norm came to the Long Beach Amateur Orchid Society when we desperately needed a new President. He graciously accepted the job, was our President, steward, leader, and teacher, and has improved our Society in many ways. Norm grows orchids and is well-known in the Air Plant, Begonia, Bromeliad, Clivia, Cycad, Fern, Plumeria, and Ti Societies.

Elisabeth and Richard Vanderlip

The Kansas Orchid Society is honored to present the 2023 Orchid Digest Diamond Award for Excellence to Elisabeth and Richard Vanderlip. The Vanderlips joined the Kansas Orchid Society in the spring of 1965. They claim they caught the incurable “orchid disease” when ordering plants for their first wedding anniversary. Amongst our most faithful members, they travel from their home in Manhattan, Kansas, to Wichita almost every month for our meetings, two hours each way. Richard is an Emeritus Professor at Kansas State University, and his special expertise is with sorghum crops. The couple have traveled extensively and are always glad to share their foreign orchid excursions with our members with many interesting presentations. Richard has always done a wonderful job as our auctioneer, and Elisabeth does her very best to “keep him honest.” Time has forced them to downsize, and most of our members are the beneficiaries of the distribution of orchids and other orchid-related items they have shared.

The Orchid Digest Diamond Award for Excellence was presented by the Orchid Society of Greater St. Louis in October of 2023 to Dr. Albert Liu and Dr. Matthew Rush for their incredible effort with our auction. They researched pictures of the plants, organized them in auction order, and projected them while they were being auctioned. They also organized the vendors and the sales tracking. It was an above-and-beyond effort! This effort paid off in advanced auction interest, the pleasure of the attendees, and an increased auction price average, and advanced auction interest. The Society members thank Albert and Matthew very much!

Jeff Harris

The San Francisco Orchid Society is honored to present the 2023 Orchid Digest Diamond Award for Excellence to Jeff Harris. We thank Jeff for his genuinely outstanding service to the Society as a tireless leader who has worked countless hours as a volunteer, caring colleague, and mentor.
Jeff became a member of SFOS in 2009, was SFOS treasurer from 2012 to 2014, and SFOS Vice President and newsletter editor from 2017-2018. He served as SFOS President for five very challenging years, from 2018 to 2023. He helped the Society thrive and grow its active membership during the pandemic by rapidly transitioning the programming to an online format for monthly meetings and later back to a hybrid format of in-person and online monthly meetings. Jeff also stepped in to manage our social media and websites, setting up online plant sales in tandem with in-person sales events. He served as show chair from 2019-2023 for the Pacific Orchid Exposition held each February and the Orchids in the Park Summer Sales Events. Jeff currently serves as the Immediate Past President of the Board.
In an incredibly complex and difficult endeavor, Jeff persevered through five years of nearly monthly meetings with the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office and the Courts until over $100,000 of the Society’s embezzled funds were recovered.

The Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence honors orchid society members for their extraordinary services to their societies. Marilyn Ladnier is indeed an extraordinary member who has gone above and beyond to help the Gulf Coast Orchid Society. When Marilyn was elected Treasurer, we had a small fund that barely met our expenses. She had little experience as a Treasurer but was willing to take on this responsibility to help us. Soon, Marilyn was keeping our books, running our raffle, and keeping track of membership. Our funds have grown almost 20 years later with her help and diligence. She manages our general account and other funds she set up to help our society function smoothly. She also runs our show advertising and does an excellent job. She always does more than is needed, even if it means being at the show at 5:30 A.M. to greet television news reporters! She does so many little things, like bringing the Show and Tell ribbons and papers each month, making the best cinnamon rolls, and keeping many of us on our toes! She is our Treasure and our Star Member! She is retiring, and we honor her with the 2023 Orchid Digest Diamond of Excellence!

Currently, he holds two positions on our board: First Vice President and Treasurer. We can always rely on him to volunteer and help during our shows, events, and monthly meetings. He also keeps busy with orchids and is involved in the Carnivorous Society, the Cactus, and the Succulent Clubs. The New Hampshire Orchid Society is honored to present the 2023 Diamond Award to Dick Josephson. Dick has been a member for over 25 years and has served the Society on various committees. He has been a trustee and Membership Chair and was integral to forming a Risk Management process for the Society. Actively involved for many years on the Show Committee, Dick arranged for annual signage. For many years, he facilitated obtaining benches loaned by local businesses for relaxing and enjoying the orchid show. His work with the By-laws and Handbook Committees resulted in major revisions over the years, many still in use. Dick encourages new members, brings his flowering orchids to monthly meetings to share, and his pickled herring at holiday potlucks is legendary! Dick’s unselfish, varied, and active involvement in NHOS epitomizes the values in the NHOS mission statement.

The Massachusetts Orchid Society is honored to present the Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to Linda Abrams. Since 1984, Linda has been an active member of MOS. Throughout her long and dedicated service to the society, Linda served on the board in several capacities. She ran the show table for many of those years and has served as our AOS representative, as well.
Linda’s passion for orchids, artistic talents, and outgoing personality are evident in everything she does, including giving talks on orchid culture, judging the show table, helping to set up MOS exhibits, both here and throughout the Northeast, volunteering at shows, and even playing banjo with her band at holiday parties! Working with Cliff Dederian, she helped plan MOS’s exhibit for the two years at the Eastern Orchid Conference held in Boston. With sincere gratitude, the Massachusetts Orchid Society bestows upon Linda this outstanding award for her dedicated service to our society.

Espie can educate and speak about orchids on any level to beginners, seasoned growers, and professionals and readily shares her vast knowledge. Espie speaks to the society each year on various topics, sharing tips and tricks, addressing cultural missteps, pests and diseases, and successful repotting techniques. The Maryland Orchid Society is honored to present the Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to Dr. Clark T. Riley for his 32 years of dedicated service to our society. Clark has served as a Board member, speaker, mentor, and webmaster and is our “go-to” orchid encyclopedia. He writes informative articles for our monthly newsletter and is a member of the Orchids Forum. Clark is an exceptional orchid grower who started growing at six years of age. For 50 years, he grew in his basement under lights and, in the last six years, in his pride and joy greenhouse. Clark was instrumental in locating our new meeting place. Clark has been and continues to be a valued member of the Maryland Orchid Society, deserving of recognition for his unwavering dedication, outstanding service, and many, many contributions.

The New Hampshire Orchid Society is honored to present the 2022 Orchid Digest Diamond Award for Excellence to Daryl Yerdon for his longstanding support of the Society. Daryl has been a member since 1996 and was instrumental in developing the NHOS Website Steering Committee and serving as our webmaster for many years. Daryl has served on the Nominating and Election committees and is a current Show committee member. Daryl is now our Social Media Liaison, managing our New Hampshire Orchid Society Facebook site. Recently he created a new Facebook page, “Friends of the New Hampshire Orchid Society,” and regularly posts our events on many other community forums. When one of our members decided to retire from orchid growing, Daryl worked with the Auction Committee to organize and prepare his plants for auction. He acted as a proxy bidder for growers unable to attend the auction. Daryl is an excellent grower who has received many awards and graciously shares his knowledge and experience.

She is a person who is always ready to step up and serve wherever and whenever a need arises. Brenda was responsible for the raffle table for ten years, served as Treasurer, helped to computerize the financial records, and was show chairperson in 2005 and 2006. The Five Cities Orchid Society presents the Orchid Digest Diamond award to Rosemary Bradshaw. As a 30-year member of the society, Rosemary has served in the offices of secretary, treasurer, auditor, and director-at-large. In 1995, Rosemary volunteered to become the first show committee chairman of the Central Coast Orchid Show and Sale sponsored by the society. After meeting the challenges of organizing a show for its first ten years, she hung up her hat as show chairman. Since then, she has continued to work with the committee overseeing show operations, as well as offering her experienced guidance. The Five Cities Orchid Society is celebrating Rosemary to recognize and thank her for her contributions to the society and for always sharing her passion for orchids.

The Orchid Society of Western Pennsylvania presents the Orchid Digest Diamond Award to honor James Yamber as an indispensable, dedicated member in the development and progression of the OSWP, for 46 years. Jim faithfully executes a complex AutoCAD layout for the annual Spring Show and implements the design. He does an outstanding job as editor of the monthly newsletter, including the monthly distribution. In ordinary times, Jim performs many jobs for the OSWP. Since the pandemic and all our communication went virtual, he has literally been the glue that holds us together. He sends numerous group emails with news and reminders, serves as the conduit for our Show & Tell, notices, and sends us our ZOOM invitations. He performs all these tasks with grace, forbearance, and good cheer.

The Kansas Orchid Society honors Sarah Pratt with the Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence. Sarah has served on our board as past president, serves as chair of our society orchid shows, and as our newsletter editor. Sarah is an entertaining and knowledgeable educator. She is an accredited American Orchid Society Judge and has numerous awarded orchids. This award is our way of saying thank you to Sarah.

St. Augustine Orchid Society
The St. Augustine Orchid Society is honored to present the Orchid Digest Diamond Award to Dr. Courtney Hackney. Courtney Hackney is an invaluable member of the St. Augustine Orchid Society. He has no interest in an official title, probably had enough administrative duties during his tenure as a university professor and biology department chair. He is an educator at his core. Courtney can talk orchids on any level, so beginners and professionals seek his advice and counsel, learning how better to grow their orchids. Courtney’s review of the plants on the show table is the highlight of our monthly meetings. He talks about each plant and its history, how best to grow it, and how it is used in hybridizing. During the pandemic, he told us bedtime stories in a monthly Zoom rendition. He speaks to the club each year on a variety of topics, sharing tips and tricks, addressing cultural missteps, pests and diseases, insights into cattleya hybridizing, and more. He helps with scheduling our speakers, identifying new talent and helping coordinate travel plans. He is our auctioneer extraordinaire, making our annual fundraising event both fun and educational. Courtney is the Good Doctor, a gift that keeps on giving!

The St. August Orchid Society honors Bill Gourley for his dedication in serving as the treasurer a short time after the club was formed. He saw the organization through the process of obtaining a non-profit status and ensuring that financial controls and fiscal discipline were in place.

The Baton Rouge Orchid Society honors Carolyn Clay for her innumerable contributions. Carolyn has held every office and served on the Board and many committees. As well as helping set up our displays at out-of- town shows, Carolyn is responsible for the society’s annual exhibit at the LSU Spring Horticulture Show, helping to spread knowledge about orchids and recruit new members for the society. She judges, offers advice, mentors new hobbyists, and shares her duplicate plants.

The Northeastern New York Orchid Society (NENYOS) honors Stanley Lee for his many years of dedication and outstanding service. He has served as an officer and board member and was president from 2010-2013. He spearheaded the NENYOS’ prominent display at the Capital District Flower Show where we attract many new members. Through his outreach efforts, our society is vibrant and healthy.
